Spectacular cosmic coincidence

A 10 tonne asteroid has crashed into Russia early this morning. The large piece of space rock probably shattered 20 miles above the ground, it enough fragments made it all the way down to Earth to cause significant damage. The small crater in the ice above is the result of one of the fragments. At least 950 people were injured as the resulting shockwave blew out windows and shook buildings in the Ural Mountains.

“It was quite extraordinary,” Chelyabinsk resident Polina Zolotarevskaya told BBC News. “We saw a very bright light and then there was a kind of a track, white and yellow in the sky.” “The explosion was so strong that some windows in our building and in the buildings that are across the road and in the city in general, the windows broke.”

Asteroids this size strike the Earth several hundred times a year, but are mostly over sea or desolate places and mostly burn up. But this event shows that when the trajectory is right, it can cause a lot of damage. Scientists have played down suggestions that there is any link between the event in the Urals and 2012 DA14, an asteroid expected to race past the Earth on Friday at a distance of just 27,700km (17,200 miles) – the closest ever predicted for an object of that size. The two asteroids approached from different directions, so it appears to be a cosmic coincidence.

  1. There are so much things happening on the earth now days, it is said that asteroid strike the earth several times a year but mostly overseas or on isolated places, now it landed on Russia leaving almost 1000 persons injured, and braking windows and other damages. The 10 ton asteroid also left a crater in the middle of the ice, that is incredible it might be scary to presence such event.

  2. Kat in our lab class played some videos from some dashboard cameras for us and I thought it was amazing! I’m glad to know that this asteroid wasn’t linked to the 2012 DA14; which is scary enough on its own.

  3. Its crazy how a asteroid crashed into Russia. Its so sad to hear that a lot of people got injured. If I were to feel the explosion and see all the windows break from the buildings I would have been so scared.

  4. What are the odds of a different asteroid actually striking Earth on the same day that a larger asteroid flew nearby? An object the size of 2012 DA14 (the larger asteroid) is predicted to only strike Earth about once every 1,200 years.

  6. The video was crazy!… I had no idea though how devistating the damage was, especially from the energy of the crash alone. Kinda makes you think about how bad a bigger one would be.

  8. It is incredible that an asteroid has crashed into Russia, which made 950 people injure as the results of the shockwave. If I was one of the people that got injure I have been terrified. It had been amazing to see the white and yellow bright lights in the sky, but as the windows broke my reaction toward to situation had been scary.
