Great video from the Guardian newspaper in UK.

Guardian video on water on Mars
Not for the first time, NASA have announced they have found water on Mars. The difference this time is that this water must have flowed recently, within days to months of this image being taken. The evidence is piling up – it now looks very likely that Mars has some sort of the surface for at least part of year. And where water flows, life is.

The idea that there may be some sort of life somewhere beyond Earth scares some people. It upsets some people. It suggests that we were are not created in some special way. This makes the journey to confirming life fraught with problems, not the least of which is how to protect this Exo-life. As a species we don’t have a stellar record in protecting native life while we explore. We have generally accepted that exploration requires a certain amount of collateral damage.  There is an international treaty on space exploration that all space – exploring countries have signed up to. The question is how we will adhere to this as the search for life progresses. In the end, the only way of confirming life might be send such an experiment that disobeys this treaty. The science and moral dilemma will only become harder to adress as we get closer to the moment that we’ve been waiting on since we started looking up.

Watch the video – what do you think?

  1. It is truly an amazing find, it may be frightening to know that there may be life on another planet, but for me, it is not. Our species should try to not endanger another species by being very careful with future research.

  2. Amazing find! hopefully if we go about this the right way we can make further discoveries about mars and learn more about earth as well!

  3. This is amazing how a planet so close to us could contain life. The treaty part kind of has me questioning what they are thinking, but I guess it is the way it is. Either way I will be paying attention to future news and updates to this!

  4. I thought this was interesting…I was not aware that an international treaty existed that could possibly keep us from observing life on Mars any further. I hope there is some way that NASA can continue to explore Mars without contaminating it!

  5. Its interesting to note how we have found water ice in several areas and evidence of water long ago but to discover that there is still a form of liquid water on the surface is mind blowing. I think in order to really understand or observe exo-life we would need to break rules and barriers and risk contamination from earthly life in order to fully understand and study life if it may be found on mars or any other place.

  6. It’s pretty sad if you ask me…..did I hear this right? Why are space agencies forbidden from contaminating alien eco-systems? What is the point of space exploration if we can’t even set foot on another planet. How are we suppose to explore and discover new life and new species? Who knows, maybe the answers to the origin of mankind lies beneath the surface of Mars, so I propose we take that extra step into space exploration and send a human being along with his scientific equipment to planet Mars and make putting a man on Mars a reality…..but, thats just my opinion.

  7. I think this can be viewed as a positive. The fact that we see another planet seems to be alive with water and it is actually recent and not millions of years ago changes the entire game here. I think that eventually as we move towards the inevitable exploration of Mars and other planets as our technology continues to evolve and grow, it will only be highlighted even more. Although some people might not agree with it, it is always good to gain as much knowledge as possible, Mars is just the next step in that.

  8. This is an amazing discovery and needs further research with proper care to not endanger any Martian life regardless of any treaties or policies!

  9. This is the most amazing thing that could ever happen! I always wished that there would be other life out there, and to be living in this moment is just amazing because it will go down in history!
