Here’s looking at you, from @HiRISE

“Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes”. That way you get to see things from their perspective. Well, so much more so then when you travel over 100 million miles. Here is us, taken from Mars. Reminds us what we look like, and how fragile we are.

NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter was 127 million miles away from Earth when the picture was taken on November 20 using the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE). Alfred McEwen, a planetary scientist at the University of Arizona and principal investigator for the HiRISE camera, said “The Moon is much darker than Earth and would barely be visible at the same brightness scale as Earth,” McEwen said. “The combined view retains the correct sizes and positions of the two bodies relative to each other.”

  1. Very interesting how you don’t realize the distance and the grand of our universe. Very intriguing the science of astronomy. Picture have many questions that I would not of asked at first sight of these pictures. Tony Luna tjluna@nmsu.edu

  2. This is very cool. It’s hard for my mind to comprehend the actual distance and size that the planets, stars, etc., are. Its easy enough to look at a picture of the moon, but to fully understand how big it is can only be done by those who have witnessed it first hand!

  3. This picture truly amazes me, on how far science has traveled throughout history. We are able to take images of our very own planet. Astronomy is definitely the most interesting science out there from my perspective.

  4. This was really interesting, I have learned a minuscule amount of astronomy in my life and from my point of view, I had always thought the moon was significantly brighter than the Earth. This picture is honestly really astonishing to look at once you realize that we are all a part of the picture.

  5. The photo showcases a different perspective of earth and the distance to the moon. It’s important to have different images to observe, so we’re able to make better conclusions and absorb the information.

  6. It is amazing to see the size difference between the moon and Earth. Taking into consideration the scale of our planet to the size of the solar system really helps us to see how tiny we are. We consider 100 miles to be a very long way to travel and yet this photo was taken from 127 million miles away. Fascinating!

  7. Its amazing to see how the moon looks compared to our Earth. It is also amazing that we are able to get an outside perspective of what our planet looks like.

  8. I have never been able to comprehend the fact that the moon is 100 million miles away due to the fact that picture quality has always been so phenomenal. This article was a great read and gave me lots of answers that I have always been wondering about perspective!

  9. To think that this picture is taken from a 100 million miles is truly amazing, especially how it captured both the Moon and Earth. We may never know what else to discover or learn from, unless we can accept different perspectives of the same subject.

  10. This image is very eye catching! It still amazes me to think how far apart objects are in space. Whenever I look up to the sky everything seems to be in reach, but in reality it is out of bounds.

  11. Earth looks so bright in the photo, and its so interesting to learn that the moon is so much darker! I’ve always thought of the moon as so bright every time I see it in the sky, and its astonishing to learn that earth is much bright than it!

  12. Its great to know we have the technology to capture these images from outter space. Our perspective changes when we see pictures like these. On Earth, the moon seems so much bigger, but this image shows us that it really isn’t compared to Earth’s size and compared to other planets in the solar system.

  13. Its so crazy to view the world from a different perspective. Especially when looking at the Earth from a picture taken from Mars. It makes you realize how tiny we are and it makes you expand your view on the way you put things in perspective. Its quite mind blowing. It is weird thinking about how if the moons brightness scale was the same as Earths then we wouldn’t be able to see it!

  14. Beyond everything else, breathtaking pictures like these really underline how far we humans have advanced in our technological capabilities. It’s hard to fandom that just a couple of centuries ago, ancient astronomers made calculations just on their pure naked eye observations of the cosmos. Having said that, Earth looks extremely ominous in that picture, as it’s just a tiny dot in a sea full of darkness.

  15. The quote that this blog starts off with is very relatable. Today everyone is quick to judge before we even realize what they are going through. I think everyone should walk a mile i each other’s shoes before criticizing. It’s definitely a great rule to live by.

  16. For me, this really shows how similar we are to our planet and our solar system. Even though it harbors us, we too are different people depending on the perspective we are looked at. There is a lot to learn about ourselves when learning about the solar system, and a lot to learn about the solar system when learning about ourselves.

  17. “Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes”, this quote is so true! We live in a world where people judge each other without knowing the story that everyone carry around. We need to start thinking ahead and be conscious of the fragile world we live in. Is really amazing to think, see and imagine that the moon is darker than earth. So cool to learn new things every day!

  18. The quote that was used to start off the post was super inspiring. “Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes,” to me means you should not judge someone until you experience or know exactly what they are going through or what has happened to them. People are fragile, our world is fragile. We need to remember that!
I also thought it was interesting how the Moon is much darker than the Earth. I never knew that. I love learning something new everyday!

  19. Since the moon is smaller than earth it light reflection is way less in comparison to earth´s reflection and thus the picture needed some type of enhancement in the picture without distorting the natural size of earth and the moon, to make the moon more visible.

  21. It is crazy to see just how different things are in space. Wen we look at the moon here on Earth some days it could just seem so huge, but it reality it’s not. It is also quite cray just to see how dark the moon is when compared to Earth.

  22. This was interesting to read because I never knew how the correct relative positions and sizes effect the brightness of the moon so that we can see it. The pictures were also very interesting to look at.
