Venus, the once-beautiful goddess #ClimateChange

Venus our close sister. Almost the same size as Earth, almost the same distance from the Sun. Once a planet just like us, probably with water and a nice habitable temperature. It may even have supported some primitive life before Earth did. Then it all went wrong and now Venus is hellish. Super hot temperatures, massive thick atmosphere, covered in volcanoes, snowing metals and raining sulfuric acid.

New research from NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York shows how beautiful it once was. This modelling was carried out by adapting Earth climate models and shows what happens in runaway climate change. “Many of the same tools we use to model climate change on Earth can be adapted to study climates on other planets, both past and present,” said Michael Way, a researcher at GISS. We, on Earth, got lucky. We spin faster and had less dry land, and, being further away, received less sunlight.

Now, with sudden climate change caused by human’s burning fossil fuels, our own atmosphere is following exactly what these same models predict. This study of Venus shows that it time to start looking after ourselves. When it comes to humanity, there is no plan-et B.

  1. This is an interesting article about Venus. Even though we have to take action and be conscious about what are we doing with our planet because in the future we are going to be like Venus and the life on this planet can disappear if this get to happens.

  2. It’s amazing to know that Venus was once like Earth where life could’ve existed for generations to come if it weren’t for such drastic climate changes. This should make our population realize how vulnerable we can be if we don’t take care of Earth properly.

  3. It is fascinating to know that Venus was so similar to us and I hope the world population will consider to treat earth better so we don’t end up like Venus one day!

  4. It is crazy, yet amazing that Venus was once very similar to Earth. It makes me wonder if our “sister” planet was exactly like Earth today, would we be able to travel to that planet as easy going on a vacation overseas? It is also crazy to believe that if we don’t change our ways as humans, Earth will end up exactly like Venus.

  5. It is crazy to think that at one point in time Venus could have had its own living civilization much like ours here on Earth. It is also kinda scary to think that if we don’t control and watch the environment and the climate control that Earth could possibly end up just as ‘hellish’ like Venus.

  6. Its very interesting how Venus is the way it is today, when many years ago it was about the same as earth. I wonder what could have happened if Venus didn’t end up the way it is today. Maybe Venus could of been our Plan-et B.

  7. It’s very interesting to understand that Venus was just like Earth. Especially considering the fact that Earth has been follow this path of climate change. The overall temperatures have been increasing. Could Earth be on its path to become what Venus is now?

  8. For Earth to have a sister planet is exciting. It makes you wonder what if Venus never changed and was like Earth. I think that good that scientist can compare a lot of things with Venus. For them to show the world what could happen if we don’t control our climate change is awesome. Maybe this will push more people into helping climate control.

  9. It is neat to learn that Venus was once very similar to our current planet. Seeing how Venus’ atmosphere has created a planet of death, it is important that we start acting to prevent the same on our planet. Otherwise, someday we could end up like our sister planet!

  10. It’s very fascinating how we are able to learn from a planet’s past with our Earth’s knowledge. Especially the fact that Venus and Earth have so many similarities and we could end up with the same tragic ending. Venus is now very hellish and completely inhabitable, it would be extremely sad and depressing if our own actions on Earth keep causing severe climate changes and turn our world like Venus. That’s why we need to pay attention to what we know about other planets and start applying to our own before it’s too late.

  11. It is very interesting how Venus is almost the same as Earth but the little differences it has turned it into a planet of death while Earth became the planet of life.

  12. It’s hard to imagine that because of a few factors Venus ended up a dead planet with acidic raid, 900 degree Fahrenheit surface temperatures and very strong winds. Its also extremely lucky that both planets started of very similar but took different courses.

  13. Similar to the other comments, I was unaware of the similarities between Earth and Venus. It is different to think that Venus was capable to sustaining life, even with the higher temperatures. Seeing the results of what had happened to Venus, could help us on Earth understand what we need to do in order the maintain Earth as a livable habitat. I think that this information is extremely important, and should be taken into consideration when it comes into preserving our own planet.

  14. Since Venus was once like earth, it is interesting to consider that it may have supported life. Unfortunately the earth is experiencing early stages of the same greenhouse effect that caused Venus to be so hot and hopefully humanity considers the negative effects of mistreating our atmosphere.

  15. I had heard that Earth and Venus were similar but I was unaware of the similarities, I still can’t believe that Venus could have held primitive life on it! Crazy to think that if we don’t take care of our planet it could some day end up like Venus!

  16. Just like many others commenting, I too have always thought Venus was as inhabitable as it now back when it was formed. To know that out planet could turn into what Venus now is, should raise awareness to everyone to take more precautions with waste or burning to keep our planet safe for years to come.

  17. So cool to know that Venus was similar to us at one point. It’s crazy how everything changed in Venus, completely different of what It was. Knowing that It might even had supported some primitive life before Earth makes you think about a lot of stuff. I bet we are not alone and we were not the first ones here.
