Chicken Asteroid #WrongWay #

99.99% of objects in the solar system orbit the Sun in the same direction – counter-clockwise as viewed from above the up above the Earth’s North pole. But, as always, there is always the odd exception to prove the rule. This newly discovered asteroid is in a giant game of chicken with Jupiter

Wrong-Way, Daredevil Asteroid Plays ‘Chicken’ with Jupiter

Astronomers have found a bizarre asteroid orbiting the sun in the wrong direction while playing a risky game of “chicken” with the largest planet in the solar system.

The unnamed asteroid shares Jupiter’s orbital space while moving in the opposite direction as the planet, which looks like a recipe for a collision, astronomers said. Yet somehow, the asteroid has managed to safely dodge Jupiter for at least tens of thousands of laps around the sun

  1. It is interesting that an asteroid is one of the very few items in the entire solar system to be orbiting a different way. It will be interesting to see what kind of damage, if any the asteroid will be able to do.

  2. This article really caught my attention especially the part where I found out an asteroid can actually travel the “wrong way” and that a Chicken asteroid is actually real. I’m definitely interested to find out if it will ever end up colliding with Jupiter.

  3. i think it’s really cool how those asteroids want to be original and go a different direction, but it’s weird how they don’t collide. It has been happening for so long already so i think it will never collide but we never know.

  4. As mentioned in class today, I thought that the Chicken asteroid was fake but seeing this I can’t believe it’s actually really. It even seems funny. I also never really thought about how fast the terrestrial planets actually orbited the Sun since they’re so close to it.

  5. It is very fascinating to know that an asteroid has been able to avoid crashing into Jupiter but sooner or later it is going to end up crashing into Jupiter.

  6. This is very interesting. I thought a planet was defined as “something that orbits the sun and clears out it’s orbit of other extremities.”
It is very cool to watch, though.

  7. It is astonishing knowing that there is an asteroid that is traveling in the wrong direction and that it had dodged Jupiter. I think it is just a matter of time before gravity causes the asteroid to crash into Jupiter.

  8. An astroid playing a game of chicken with the biggest planet in our Solar System seems extremely funny. It managing to not collide with Jupiter yet is quite lucky. Its also amazing to think of it orbiting the “wrong way” from every other object in our Solar System. Space always seems to be presenting us with so many exceptions to the rules.

  9. I’m just waiting for it to crash into Jupiter! That is crazy. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact it is going to opposite direction. It’s wild!

  10. I think it’s kind of funny to describe it as playing chicken with Jupiter. I also find it fascinating how some things aren’t noticed right away, and we have all even since kids been taught that all planets revolve around the sun counterclockwise. So to hear about a planet that goes clockwise and almost hits Jupiter while it orbits is mind blowing. I love the fact that even though we already know so much about the universe, there is still more to learn.

  11. It is absolutely wild to see that this planet is completely orbiting in the opposite direction as our solar system. At the same time it also scary to see these planets come so close to each other and miss each time for such a long time. It would be crazy to see what would happen I these objects would to collide.

  12. The fact that this asteroid goes the complete opposite direction of our solar system is cool. I defies and breaks the laws of our solar system, that are set and proven but now there is something new to look into. The game of chicken can last forever or one day it could lose.

  14. How crazy! The fact that it has yet to collide with Jupiter. I wonder what is going to happen if it ever hits with Jupiter? Maybe there is some type of force that pulls it away from Jupiter?

  15. The fact that is asteroid has dodged Jupiter for the past tens of thousands of years is amazing and how it travels in the opposite direction of 99% of our solar system. This is so rare in fact only 82 of the 720,000+ know asteroids to do this.

  16. Its crazy that an asteroid managed to break the laws of the solar system. If this asteroid managed to do it, it seems more possible for other objects to do it as well. Perhaps now that we know about this one we will find more like it to help explain why this is happening.

  17. I think this is cool that they found an asteroid that is orbiting the sun in the wrong direction opposite of everything else in our solar system. Since it’s orbiting in the wrong direction of everything else and could hit Jupiter but could, that is a scary thought. What will happen if this weird little asteroid does hit Jupiter? and why is it going the wrong direction of everything else in the solar system?

  18. It is pretty crazy that a solar object has defied the rules of the solar system in this way. To think its different orbit has not yet resulted in its destruction seems impossible. If it has lasted this long, I don’t know if it will every be captured by Jupiter.

  19. Amazing how a counter clockwise orbiting asteroid can avoid the biggest planet in the solar system for tens of thousands of laps around the sun and I still can’t get a text back.

  23. I didn’t think it was possible for an asteroid to travel the “wrong way,” but it’s quite interesting to see what could happen if it does. I wonder what caused it to orbit in the opposite direction.
